Complaint Repair lets consumers vent

Posted on October 19, 2000

Looking to let loose some complaints, but can't find a willing audience among family and friends?

Instead of turning to strangers on the street, post your complaints for all the world to see on Complaint Repair.

The Naperville-based company provides a forum for consumers to complain at length. Visitors to the Web site, there are between 4,000 and 10,000 per day, can choose to type in a complaint to be posted on the Internet or choose to send an electronic message on to the company they think is responsible for their trouble.

Complainers can read what others have said and post a response. This summer airline delays and banking fees topped the list of beefs aired on the Web site.

And it's all free.

Matthew Smith runs the Web site from his home and makes his money from advertisers. (Don't be scared off though, the ads are low key.)

Smith was struck with the idea of Web sites devoted to customer service back in 1995 while reading the back of a shampoo bottle, which urged customers to call a toll-free number with questions, comments and complaints.

Although he was offered venture capital money, Smith decided to launch Complaint Repair last May using the old-fashioned business model of low overhead, long hours and slow growth.
