United Airlines - flight from Washington Dulles to Raleigh Durham, NC - long travel experience

I was travelling on a 8:55 Pm flight from Washington Dulles to Raleigh Durham, NC last Sunday (2/10/02). As is normal, I reached the airport at 7:15 and arrived at the terminal waiting for the flight. At around 8:15, we
received first notification that the flight was to be delayed to around 9:40.

We were told it was because of delays in the incoming flight. There were four flights leaving that gate, and all of them were delayed, so very soon it got really crowded.

At around 10, we came to know that the incoming flight could not leave Newark, NJ (where it was coming from) because of maintenance. The agent was kind enough to inquire to see if we could have a replacement aircraft but failed in his attempt. At least the gate agents tried their best, we have to say. The expected time of departure was put to 11:50.

At around 11:15 we came to know that the incoming flight had taken up from Newark and would be arriving at around 12 in Washington Dulles. But then came the twist, this was the aircraft which would take us to Raleigh but not the crew !! The crew was flying the other aircraft (which was still on the ground in Newark, NJ and had not yet been cleared by maintenance) and we could only leave when that crew arrived.

Ultimately it was around 1.30 AM by the time the flight left Washington Dulles (after an agonizing wait on the tarmac for fuel). We reached Raleigh Durham at around 2.45 AM and it was a huge struggle getting to our
destinations because of lack of transport.

United gate agents did give us a $100 travel voucher. And they as well as the crew tried their best to get things under way, but we spent more than half the night trying to fly a less-than-an-hour flight !!
