RE: AT&T Wireless mMode - experience dropped calls due to holes in GSM / GPRS wireless coverage
AT&T has been heavily marketing their "Next Generation" mMode GSM/GPRS technology over the older TDMA technology. AT&T says this (GPRS) is the future and the TDMA technology will be phased out someday. Heavy discounts are offered as incentives, while relatively few discounts remain on the TDMA phones and plans. But don't give up your existing TDMA phones just yet! Why?
Coverage is not complete for new GPRS technology so instead of roaming to another wireless carrier, with the GPRS mMode you get AT&T only or no signal at all. So if you are talking on a GPRS phone and move out of AT&T's signal range - click - end of conversation. In all fairness, AT&T did tell us that there are still a lot of holes in their GPRS coverage. We found this to be especially true in remote/rural areas (but TDMA still worked).
The GPRS technology seems much more sensitive to weather conditions. On more than one heavy rain occasion, my wife's GPRS phone went into 'No Service" (in places where she normally had a good signal) while my old TDMA phone shows 4 out of 5 bars of signal strength. When the rains stopped her mMode came back to life.
So, in the AT&T world, we carry two wireless phones around. When the mMode GPRS works it is very clear and superior to TDMA. Unfortunately, getting a GPRS signal seems to be more a miss than a hit.
I would advise anyone who is considering this technology to take full advantage of the 30 day money back guarantee. If you already have a TDMA phone, I wouldn't upgrade to GPRS (or give it up) until coverage improves (and that may be a couple of years). I far as I am convinced, mMode is not ready for prime time yet.
