I received 2 money orders that were purchased from the Safeway on either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. When I went to the store to cash them, I was told that they don't "cash" money orders, they only sell them. The day manager told me if they person that purchased them brought in the receipts, she would refund the money because they were "Not Used for Intended Purpose" but have to charge me a fee to do so. The purchaser and I went back to the store this evening, with the receipts, only to be told that it's against policy to cash money orders. How can you sell money orders and not cash them, especially ones purchased at Safeway? To make matters worse, Chevy Chase bank will not cash money orders from Safeway either, they want you to deposit them and then they put a 5 day hold on your account. It cost me $18.20 to get them cashed at the ACE checking cashing store and this is unacceptable.
I frequently send my clients to Safeway to buy money orders for the application fees and deposits, but after the experience I had today, I will no longer refer my friends, family or customers to you and I don't intend to continue shopping there either, I will take my business back to your competitor. This policy needs to be changed or another type of money order should be used, one that is recognizable everywhere, NOT Safeway Moneygram.
