Complaint Repair received the following consumer message on February 25, 2003:

Applebee's restraunt, Clearwater, FL - poor dining experience

My fiancé and I recently visited Applebee's on McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater. This was in the month of January when all of the snowbirds are in Florida, so it is next to impossible to find a place to eat with less than an hour wait. Applebee's did not have a wait that evening so since we were with my 4 year old daughter we decided to eat there.

We were seated in the bar area and waited almost 15 minutes for the waitress to even arrive at our table to take our drink orders. She informed us she would be "right back" but took another 15 minutes to bring back the drinks. When we were first seated the place was not busy, but by the time our drinks arrived it had become much busier.

My fiancé ordered an appetizer and along with that we all ordered our entrees. Within 20 minutes our appetizer had arrived, within two minutes of that arriving out came the entrees. (Remember we are at a small bar table) My fiancé asked her what she planned on doing with the entrees to which she stated "I don't know" We told her to take the appetizer away since there would now be no room for the rest of the food. He also told her that she needed to get her timing down better. She gave no reply.

Now the horror of the most horrible dinner I have ever had. My fiancé ordered some kind of steak with mushroom's on the side. The mushrooms were an extra charge and tasted like they had basically been boiled in water for flavor. The steak was like a piece of shoe leather. I had ordered a chicken quesadilla appetizer as my entree. I think they must have brought me someone else's appetizer that had decided against it, and had been left under a heat lamp until someone else ordered it.

I could not even positively identify the substance as chicken inside,it was so dried out and old tasting. Upon the first bite it was chewy, and the cheese had absolutely no elasticity. To add insult to injury the bill was about $50.00. We did not complain to the manager, because we decided no matter what they offered us we would never go back again. Now I know why they did not have a wait during "prime season".
